Building Structures and Practices to Engage Students
David Chadwell - david@chadwellconsulting.com
Welcome! My work is to support educators by providing structures and practices that engage students. I am currently a middle school social studies teacher. I also work with schools where there are educators who are interested in better understanding how to teach boys and girls, including the implementation of single-gender programs schools.
Recent Media Events
I was interviewed by Larry Jacobs on Education Talk Radio on single-gender education (June 21, 2011). Listen to the interview here (30 minutes).
Read an article from Spain (El Periodico) debating single-gender education. I was quoted in two sections (though my last name was misspelled.) Page One Here, Page Two Here.
In February 2011 I was in Portugal and Spain, working in four cities to discuss the opportunities of single-gender education in public schools.
I am the author of the only book on how to create a single-gender program. It is titled, A Gendered Choice: Designing and Implementing Single-Sex Programs and Schools.
I approach the issue of gender from a teacher's point of view with practice suggestions that fit within a demands of teachers.
For four years, I was the Coordinator for Single-Gender Initiatives for the South Carolina Department of Education. I was the only person in the country who held such a position at the state level.

When working as a librarian I ran multiple inquiry projects with all
classes.

As a multi-grade teacher in China I linked content with student
interests to build meaning. I taught world history backwards
through three key concepts and held writersworkshop. Novels
were the foundation of our social studies and language classes.
**
Teaching social studies in a public school spurred me to create a
year-long project where students created their own civilizations,
essentially a problem-based learning unit.

As a creator of a single-gender magnet program, I continually
challenged staff that, "we were creating the best middle school
experience possible."
I work with educators to better understand
gender differences and their impact within the classroom (both coed
and single-gender) and to help implement single-gender
choice options in schools. I believe that understanding how
gender can play a role with student learning is a form of
differentiated instruction and can benefit all teachers.
Feel free to email me if you are interested in having me work with
your staff. Recently I have worked with schools in Florida,
Texas, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Nevada, and of course South Carolina. I
have presented at national conferences including ASCD, National Middle School
Association, AERA, and the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color.
I have authored several publications which you can read about in the "About David" section.
I
look forward to hearing from you.
